Euzkadi (newspaper)
Euzkadi was a Basque nationalist newspaper published in Bilbao, Spain, primarily between 1913 and 1937. It served as a key voice for the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) during a period of significant political and social upheaval in Spain.
The newspaper advocated for Basque autonomy and promoted Basque language and culture. It played a crucial role in shaping public opinion within the Basque Country and fostering a sense of national identity. Euzkadi covered a wide range of topics, including politics, economics, culture, and sports, all viewed through a Basque nationalist lens.
During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), Euzkadi supported the Basque government, which sided with the Republican forces. Its offices were located in Bilbao, which briefly served as the capital of the Basque autonomous region. Following the capture of Bilbao by Franco's forces in 1937, publication of Euzkadi ceased.
The name Euzkadi is a Basque term for the Basque Country. The newspaper remains a significant historical source for understanding Basque nationalism in the early 20th century.
