Eljigidei

Eljigidei (also spelled Iljigidei, Eljigitei; flourished 13th century) was a Mongol military commander and noyan (lord) who played a significant role in the Mongol Empire, particularly during the reigns of Ögedei Khan and Güyük Khan. He is best known for his governorship of Persia, replacing Chormaqan Noyan in that position.

Eljigidei was appointed to command the Mongol forces in Persia in 1241, following Chormaqan's incapacitation due to illness. His main task was to consolidate Mongol control over the region, suppress rebellions, and continue the expansion of Mongol influence westward. He oversaw military operations against the remnants of the Khwarazmian dynasty and other resisting forces.

During his tenure, Eljigidei implemented policies aimed at maintaining order and extracting tribute from the conquered territories. He also participated in the selection of Güyük Khan as Ögedei's successor in 1246. He was a prominent figure in the Mongol court politics of the time.

Eljigidei's governorship came to an end with the ascension of Möngke Khan in 1251. As part of Möngke's purges of those perceived as loyal to the previous regime, Eljigidei was executed. His removal marked a shift in Mongol policy towards Persia and paved the way for the appointment of new governors and the eventual establishment of the Ilkhanate.
