Elizabeth Hand

Elizabeth Hand (born August 29, 1957) is an American author known for her dark fantasy, science fiction, and horror novels and short stories. She has also written media tie-in novels, comic books, and criticism.

Hand’s work often explores themes of art, addiction, alienation, and the intersection of the mundane and the fantastical. Her writing style is characterized by its lyrical prose, vivid imagery, and complex characters. Many of her stories are set in the near future or alternative present, often featuring decaying urban landscapes and a sense of encroaching environmental collapse.

Notable works include the Bas Bleu trilogy ( Winterlong, Aestival Tide, Icarus Descending), the Cass Neary crime novels (beginning with Generation Loss), and standalone novels such as Waking the Moon and Available Dark. Her short fiction has appeared in numerous anthologies and magazines, and she has won multiple awards for her writing, including the Shirley Jackson Award, the Nebula Award, and the World Fantasy Award.

Hand currently resides in coastal Maine and London, England.
