Edward Matthews (baritone)

Edward Matthews (1914-1994) was an American operatic baritone, concert artist, and educator. He was particularly noted for his interpretations of African-American spirituals and for his commitment to promoting the works of Black composers.

Matthews began his musical studies at the Hampton Institute (now Hampton University) and later studied at the Juilliard School. His operatic debut was in 1939 as Amonasro in Verdi's Aida. He went on to perform with the New York City Opera, the San Francisco Opera, and numerous other companies in the United States and internationally.

During World War II, Matthews served in the United States Army. After the war, he resumed his singing career, focusing increasingly on concert recitals and oratorios. He toured extensively, giving performances of spirituals, art songs, and operatic arias.

Matthews was a dedicated educator, holding teaching positions at several universities, including Fisk University and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He was known for his work in vocal pedagogy and his mentorship of young singers.

His recordings include albums of spirituals and art songs. He is remembered as a significant figure in the history of African-American classical music and as a gifted and versatile performer.
