Edward Fitzgerald (brewer)
Edward Fitzgerald (1808-1866) was an Irish-Canadian businessman and brewer, best known for founding the Emerald Brewery, later known as the Fitzgerald Brewery, in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. He emigrated from Ireland to Prince Edward Island in the 1820s and initially worked as a merchant. Recognizing the growing demand for beer, he established the Emerald Brewery around 1835.
Fitzgerald built a successful business that became a prominent feature of Charlottetown's industrial landscape. He served as an alderman in the city council and was involved in various community activities. The brewery remained in the Fitzgerald family for generations and continued to operate for over a century, becoming a significant part of Prince Edward Island's history and economy. His sons, including Thomas Heath Haviland Fitzgerald, continued to run the business after his death.
