Ecgonine

Ecgonine is a tropane alkaloid found in coca leaves, although present in far smaller quantities than cocaine. It is a naturally occurring substance and is considered a metabolite of cocaine. Chemically, it is a carboxylic acid derivative of tropane.

Ecgonine is significant primarily as a precursor and breakdown product of cocaine. It is formed by the hydrolysis of cocaine, either through chemical processes or metabolically within the body. Ecgonine itself has little to no stimulant or euphoric effect, unlike its parent compound.

The detection of ecgonine in urine tests is often used as an indicator of cocaine use. Because ecgonine persists in the body longer than cocaine, it provides a longer window of detection for drug testing purposes.
