Neverware

Neverware was a software company best known for developing CloudReady, an operating system designed to repurpose older PCs and laptops by converting them into Chrome OS-based devices.

Overview

Founded in 2011, Neverware aimed to extend the lifespan of existing hardware by providing a lightweight and secure operating system. CloudReady was targeted at both individual users and educational and enterprise institutions looking to reduce e-waste and maximize their technology investments. The operating system was built upon Google's Chromium OS and offered a similar user experience to Chrome OS.

CloudReady

CloudReady allowed users to install a Chrome OS-like environment on devices that might no longer be capable of running modern versions of Windows or macOS efficiently. It provided access to web applications and Android apps (through a later update), effectively transforming older machines into Chromebooks. CloudReady was available in both a Home Edition for personal use and Education/Enterprise Editions for organizations. The Education and Enterprise editions provided management tools and support tailored for institutional deployments.

Acquisition by Google

In December 2020, Google acquired Neverware. Following the acquisition, Google integrated CloudReady technology into Chrome OS Flex. Chrome OS Flex is a free, standalone operating system that allows users to install Chrome OS on PCs and Macs, effectively fulfilling Neverware's original mission on a broader scale and directly under the Google umbrella.

Legacy

Although Neverware as an independent company no longer exists, its legacy lives on through Chrome OS Flex. The acquisition demonstrates Google's commitment to extending the lifespan of existing hardware and providing a sustainable computing solution. The work pioneered by Neverware has significantly contributed to reducing e-waste and democratizing access to modern computing experiences.
