East Suffolk (UK Parliament constituency)
East Suffolk is a constituency in the United Kingdom, returning one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons. Located in the county of Suffolk, it was first created for the 1997 general election, largely replacing the former Suffolk Coastal constituency.
Boundaries: The constituency encompasses a predominantly rural area of eastern Suffolk. It includes towns such as Framlingham, Saxmundham, Leiston, and Aldeburgh. Significant coastal areas, including Sizewell (site of a nuclear power station), are also within its boundaries.
History: The seat has consistently been held by the Conservative Party since its creation. Its predecessor, Suffolk Coastal, was also a Conservative stronghold for many years. Boundary changes have occurred since its initial creation to reflect population shifts, but the core geographical area has remained largely the same.
Members of Parliament:
- 1997–2010: John Gummer (Conservative)
- 2010–2024: Therese Coffey (Conservative)
- 2024-Present: TBC (Following the 2024 general election)
Election Results: The East Suffolk constituency has typically returned a strong Conservative majority. Recent election results generally show a significant lead for the Conservative candidate over candidates from the Labour Party, Liberal Democrats, and Green Party. Detailed election results for each general election can be found on official election websites and historical databases.
Demographics: The constituency is generally considered to have a relatively affluent and aging population. The area has a significant agricultural sector and a growing tourism industry, particularly related to its coastal location and historical sites.
