Down (band)
Down is an American heavy metal supergroup formed in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1991. The band's lineup initially consisted of vocalist Phil Anselmo (Pantera), guitarists Pepper Keenan (Corrosion of Conformity) and Kirk Windstein (Crowbar), bassist Todd Strange (Crowbar), and drummer Jimmy Bower (Eyehategod).
Down is known for its distinct sludge metal sound, incorporating elements of doom metal, blues rock, and southern rock. Their music often features slow tempos, heavy riffs, and Anselmo's powerful, blues-tinged vocals. Lyrical themes explored by the band include personal struggles, drug use, and philosophical reflections.
Down has released four studio albums: NOLA (1995), Down II: A Bustle in Your Hedgerow (2002), Down III: Over the Under (2007), and Down IV – Part I (2012). They have also released several EPs and live albums. The band has toured extensively and has gained a dedicated fanbase within the heavy metal community.
The lineup of Down has seen changes over the years. Todd Strange left the band and was replaced by Rex Brown, also of Pantera. Kirk Windstein departed in 2013 and was initially replaced by Bobby Landgraf. In 2020, Pepper Keenan rejoined the band after a period of absence. Currently, the band consists of Phil Anselmo, Pepper Keenan, Jimmy Bower, and Kirk Windstein, with Pat Bruders (Crowbar) on bass.
