Disney Channel (Australia)
Disney Channel Australia was a 24-hour Australian subscription television channel that was available on Foxtel, Austar, Optus Television, and TransTV. It launched in 1996 and primarily targeted children and pre-teens, broadcasting a mix of original Disney Channel series, acquired programs, and Disney-branded movies.
The channel featured both Australian-produced content and imported programming from the United States and other Disney Channel international territories. Popular original Australian series included "The New Adventures of Ocean Girl," while imported shows included "Hannah Montana," "The Suite Life of Zack & Cody," and "Phineas and Ferb."
Disney Channel Australia also operated a sister channel, Disney Junior (formerly Playhouse Disney), catering to a younger preschool audience.
The channel ceased broadcasting on February 29, 2020, along with its sister channels Disney Junior and Disney XD. This closure coincided with the launch of the Disney+ streaming service in Australia, which absorbed much of the channel's content. The linear channel's closure was attributed to the changing media consumption habits of its target audience, with a greater shift towards streaming platforms. The channel's programming is now primarily available through Disney+.
