Henry Wheeler (signalman)

Henry Wheeler was a signalman working for the London and North Western Railway (LNWR) during the late 19th century. He is best known for his role in the Quintinshill rail disaster of 1915, the worst railway accident in British history.

Wheeler, along with James Tinsley, was on duty at the Quintinshill signal box when the collision occurred. The disaster was primarily attributed to their rule violations and negligence. Specifically, they failed to adhere to proper signaling procedures, including the crucial reminder appliance rules, to ensure the safe passage of trains through the section. They neglected to safeguard the section against incoming trains while a local goods train was shunted onto the main lines.

Wheeler and Tinsley were subsequently tried for manslaughter. Both were found guilty; Tinsley was sentenced to three years' penal servitude, and Wheeler received a lesser sentence of three years' imprisonment. Following their release, both men returned to railway work, albeit in less safety-critical roles. The case highlighted the importance of strict adherence to safety regulations within the railway industry.
