David Watkin (cinematographer)
David Watkin (23 March 1925 – 19 February 2008) was a British cinematographer, renowned for his innovative and influential work across a wide range of genres. Over a career spanning several decades, Watkin collaborated with some of the most prominent directors in film history, including Richard Lester, Tony Richardson, Mike Nichols, and Sydney Pollack.
Watkin developed a distinctive naturalistic style, often utilizing available light and rejecting the artificiality of traditional studio lighting. This approach, influenced by the French New Wave, brought a heightened sense of realism and intimacy to his films. He was particularly adept at shooting in challenging locations and conditions.
His notable credits include The Knack ...and How to Get It (1965), Help! (1965), Catch-22 (1970), The Devils (1971), Yentl (1983), Out of Africa (1985), Moonstruck (1987), Hamlet (1990), and Proof (1991). Watkin earned an Academy Award for Best Cinematography for his work on Out of Africa. He also received several BAFTA Award nominations and won for Yentl. His contributions to the art of cinematography were widely recognized and he is considered a highly influential figure in the field.
