David Lane (British politician)

David William St. John Lane (born 24 September 1922, died 9 February 1994) was a British Conservative politician. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Cambridge from 1967 to 1976.

Lane was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge. Before entering politics, he worked in business, including positions at Unilever.

He won the Cambridge by-election in 1967 following the death of the previous MP, Sir Hamilton Kerr. During his time in Parliament, he served as a junior minister in several departments, including the Home Office and the Department of Employment.

Lane resigned from Parliament in 1976 to become Chairman of the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE), a position he held until 1982. His appointment to the CRE was initially controversial, given his Conservative background, but he oversaw several important initiatives during his tenure, focused on promoting racial equality and combating discrimination in the United Kingdom. Following his time at the CRE, he returned to a career in business.
