Cristina (singer)
Cristina Monet Zilkha (1956-2020), most famously known simply as Cristina, was an American singer and songwriter associated with the no wave and new wave music scenes of the late 1970s and early 1980s. She was known for her distinctive deadpan delivery and sophisticated, often ironic lyrics.
Cristina rose to prominence after being signed to ZE Records, a label known for its eclectic roster of artists. Her debut single, "Disco Clone," a satirical take on disco music, became a cult hit in 1978. Her self-titled debut album, Cristina, released in 1980, further showcased her unique style and gained her a loyal following. It included the song "Is That All There Is?", a cover of the Peggy Lee standard, re-imagined with a punk sensibility.
She later released the album Sleep It Off in 1984, produced by Don Was. The album had a more overtly commercial sound, but failed to achieve widespread success.
Cristina largely retreated from the music industry in the late 1980s. In later years, her music experienced a resurgence in popularity and critical appreciation. Her work has been cited as an influence by numerous artists.
