Charles Fisher (poet)

Charles Fisher (1808-1880) was a Canadian lawyer, politician, and poet. Born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, he received his early education there before studying law. He was admitted to the bar in 1833 and established a successful legal practice.

Fisher entered politics and became a prominent figure in the pre-Confederation era of New Brunswick. He advocated for responsible government and played a key role in the reforms that led to its establishment in the province. He served in the New Brunswick Legislative Assembly for several terms, representing the York County constituency. He held various cabinet positions, including Attorney General.

While known primarily for his political career, Fisher also possessed a literary talent and wrote poetry. His poems often reflected his patriotic sentiments and celebrated the beauty of New Brunswick's natural landscapes. His poetic works provide insights into the social and cultural values of the time. Though not widely anthologized or critically acclaimed as a major poet, his contributions to the literary landscape of New Brunswick are acknowledged. Information on published collections of his work is scarce, suggesting his poems may have primarily appeared in newspapers and periodicals.
