Character (arts)

In the arts, a character is a person, creature, being, thing, or force in a narrative. Characters are essential for driving plot and conveying themes. They can be major or minor, simple or complex, and may undergo significant development throughout the course of the story (a dynamic character) or remain relatively unchanged (a static character).

Role and Function:

Characters serve a variety of functions, including:

Character Development:

Types of Characters:

Characters can be categorized in various ways, including:

• Antagonist: The character who opposes the protagonist.

• Round Character: A complex and multi-faceted character with well-developed traits.

• Stock Character: A stereotypical character that is easily recognizable (e.g., the damsel in distress, the wise old man).
