Catt Hall
Catt Hall is a building located on the Iowa State University (ISU) campus in Ames, Iowa. It primarily houses the departments of Political Science, History, and World Languages and Cultures. The building is named after Carrie Chapman Catt, a prominent alumna of Iowa State University and a nationally and internationally recognized leader in the women's suffrage movement.
Catt Hall was originally constructed in 1922 and was known as the Home Economics Building. It provided space for programs related to home economics, which were central to the university's land-grant mission at the time. As academic programs evolved and expanded, the building's purpose changed.
In 1994, the building was officially renamed Catt Hall in honor of Carrie Chapman Catt, recognizing her significant contributions to women's rights and her connection to Iowa State University. The renaming ceremony highlighted Catt's legacy and the importance of her work in achieving voting rights for women.
Today, Catt Hall provides classrooms, offices, and research spaces for the departments it houses. It also serves as a location for various university events and activities. The building's name serves as a constant reminder of Carrie Chapman Catt's achievements and the ongoing pursuit of equality and social justice. It is a significant landmark on the Iowa State University campus, representing both the university's history and its commitment to promoting women's leadership.
