Categories (game)
Categories, also known by various other names like "Scattergories," is a word game where players must come up with words or phrases that fit specific categories, all starting with a given letter. The game is typically played with multiple players, each attempting to fill in a chart or list of categories with appropriate answers within a set time limit.
Gameplay:
The basic gameplay loop involves the following steps:
-
Category List: A predetermined list of categories is selected. These categories can range from general (e.g., "A Country") to more specific (e.g., "Things Found in a Kitchen," "Types of Beverages," "A Famous Person").
-
Letter Selection: A letter of the alphabet is randomly selected. This letter will be the initial letter that all valid answers must begin with.
-
Timed Round: Players are given a set amount of time (typically a few minutes) to fill in as many categories on their list as they can, ensuring each answer starts with the selected letter.
-
Scoring: Once the time is up, players compare their answers. If multiple players have the same answer for a category, those answers are usually crossed out (or considered invalid). Only unique and valid answers score points (usually one point per unique answer). Validity is determined by the agreement of the players, and may vary depending on the group.
