Witless Bay (bay)

Witless Bay is a town located on the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland, Canada. It is situated approximately 35 kilometers south of St. John's. Witless Bay is known for its ecological reserve, the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve, which is a significant breeding ground for seabirds, particularly Atlantic puffins.

The town's economy is largely based on fishing, with tourism playing an increasing role due to the popularity of whale watching and bird watching tours, particularly during the summer months when the puffins are nesting.

The name "Witless Bay" has a somewhat debated origin. One theory suggests it derives from a derogatory term used by early English fishermen to describe the perceived incompetence of the local Irish fishermen. Another theory proposes that the name is a corruption of an earlier, possibly French, name.

The Witless Bay Ecological Reserve comprises four islands: Green Island, Gull Island, Great Island, and Pee Pee Island. These islands are home to millions of seabirds, including Atlantic puffins, common murres, black-legged kittiwakes, and Leach's storm-petrels. The reserve is accessible by boat tours operating from nearby towns.

Historically, the area was inhabited by the Beothuk people prior to European settlement. European settlement began in the 17th century, primarily by English and Irish settlers. The community has a rich cultural heritage tied to its fishing traditions.
