Camera Obscura (journal)
Camera Obscura is a peer-reviewed academic journal focusing on feminism, culture, and media studies. Founded in 1976, the journal provides a forum for interdisciplinary scholarship that examines the intersections of gender, race, sexuality, and class within visual culture, film, television, and new media. Camera Obscura publishes theoretical essays, interviews, and book reviews, aiming to contribute to critical debates surrounding representation, power, and social justice. The journal has historically been associated with feminist film theory and has expanded to encompass a broader range of topics related to visual and media culture. It is published by Duke University Press. Its title derives from the Latin term for a darkened room with a small hole or lens that projects an image of the outside world onto an opposing surface.
