Caleuche

The Caleuche is a mythological ghost ship in the folklore of the Chiloé Island, off the coast of Chile. It is said to appear on foggy nights, sailing near the island, carrying the spirits of those who have drowned at sea. According to legend, the ship is beautifully illuminated and filled with music and revelry, designed to lure the living.

The Caleuche is manned by powerful brujos (sorcerers) who can navigate the ship through the waters and even underwater. They are believed to be responsible for collecting the drowned souls and transporting them to the ship.

The fate of the souls on board the Caleuche varies in different versions of the legend. Some believe they live a joyous afterlife of endless celebration. Others say they are transformed into marine creatures or are forever bound to serve the brujos aboard the ship.

The appearance of the Caleuche is often considered an omen of misfortune, specifically related to the sea. It is believed that those who see the ship are destined for a watery grave.

The legend of the Caleuche is deeply ingrained in the culture of Chiloé and reflects the islanders' close relationship with the sea and their anxieties surrounding its dangers.
