C/2007 N3 (Lulin)

C/2007 N3 (Lulin) was a non-periodic comet discovered by astronomers Chi Sheng Lin and Ye Quan-Zhi at the Lulin Observatory in Taiwan on July 11, 2007. Its designation, C/2007 N3, indicates it is a non-periodic comet (C/) discovered in the second half of July (N) in the year 2007 (2007). The name "Lulin" is derived from the observatory where it was discovered.

The comet became visible to amateur astronomers in late February 2008, reaching its perihelion (closest approach to the Sun) on February 10, 2008. During its closest approach to Earth, it presented a notable sight in the night sky with a visible green coma, caused by diatomic carbon (C2) molecules. Its tail was described as relatively long and displayed a slight curvature.

Observations of C/2007 N3 (Lulin) contributed to scientific understanding of cometary composition and behavior. Studies analyzed its spectral characteristics to determine the composition of its gases and dust. Its trajectory was carefully tracked to improve models of cometary orbits and gravitational interactions within the solar system. While considered a relatively bright comet for amateur observation, it did not reach the spectacular brightness of some other comets. Following its perihelion passage, it receded into the outer solar system, fading from view. Further observations are unlikely due to its orbital trajectory.
