Bungalow

A bungalow is a style of house, typically a low, one-story structure, although some may include a second story built into the roof, often with dormer windows. Key characteristics of bungalows include a low-pitched roof, wide overhanging eaves, a large front porch, and an open floor plan. The term "bungalow" originates from the Hindi word "bangla," meaning "Bengali-style house." These were traditionally small, thatched-roof cottages built for British administrators in Bengal, India, during the colonial period.

The bungalow style gained popularity in the Western world in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly in the United States and Great Britain. American bungalows, in particular, were a reaction against the ornate Victorian architecture of the time, emphasizing simplicity, functionality, and craftsmanship. These bungalows often incorporated natural materials like wood and stone, and were designed to blend in with their surroundings.

There are several variations of the bungalow style, including:

Bungalows remain a popular housing choice due to their affordability, accessibility (due to their single-story design), and charming aesthetic. While the term generally refers to a one-story dwelling, some houses with similar architectural features but two stories might also be colloquially referred to as bungalows, depending on the region and specific design elements.
