USS Osprey (AM-29)

The USS Osprey (AM-29) was a Lapwing-class minesweeper of the United States Navy. She was laid down on 13 December 1917 by the Gas Engine & Power Co. and Charles L. Seabury Co., Morris Heights, New York; launched on 26 June 1918; sponsored by Miss Ethel H. Smith; and commissioned on 20 November 1918, Lieutenant Commander H. H. Hall in command.

Following commissioning, Osprey served along the Atlantic coast in a minesweeping capacity. Her duties included training exercises and participating in fleet maneuvers. As part of Mine Squadron 1, she assisted in clearing minefields laid during World War I.

In the 1920s and 1930s, Osprey continued her service along the Atlantic, operating out of various ports. She participated in fleet problems and engaged in training operations designed to maintain readiness. She was reclassified as a Fleet Tug, AT-128, on 1 May 1942.

During World War II, Osprey served in a support role along the Atlantic coast. She provided towing services and assisted with harbor operations. Her wartime service was primarily focused on coastal defense and logistical support.

USS Osprey was decommissioned on 28 November 1945. She was struck from the Naval Vessel Register on 8 May 1946. She was subsequently sold for scrapping on 25 July 1946.
