Breaking In (2018 film)
Breaking In is a 2018 American action thriller film directed by James McTeigue and starring Gabrielle Union, who also produced the film. The screenplay is by Ryan Engle, based on a story by Engle, Jaime Primak Sullivan, and Christine Roum.
The film centers on Shaun Russell (played by Union), a woman who must protect her children and rescue them from a group of home invaders who have taken over her deceased father's fortified, remote estate. The robbers are after a hidden safe containing a substantial amount of money. Shaun finds herself locked outside and must use her wits and physical prowess to outsmart the intruders and save her family.
The narrative focuses on themes of parental love, resourcefulness, and the lengths a mother will go to protect her children. The setting plays a crucial role, with the high-tech security system of the house becoming both an obstacle and a tool for Shaun.
Breaking In was released in the United States on May 11, 2018, and received generally negative reviews from critics, who criticized its predictable plot and reliance on genre tropes. However, Union's performance was often praised. Despite the critical reception, the film was a moderate box office success.
