Bob French (jazz musician)
Bob French (1938-2012) was a New Orleans jazz drummer and bandleader. He was a significant figure in the city's traditional jazz scene for over four decades.
French was born in New Orleans into a musical family; his father, Papa French, was a renowned banjoist and bandleader who led the Original Tuxedo Orchestra. Bob French took over leadership of the Original Tuxedo Orchestra in 1977 following his father's death and continued to lead the band until his own death.
French played in a traditional New Orleans style, often incorporating elements of Dixieland and swing. He was known for his steady drumming, his showmanship, and his dedication to preserving the legacy of New Orleans jazz. He performed regularly at venues such as Preservation Hall and Snug Harbor, and toured extensively both nationally and internationally.
Besides leading the Original Tuxedo Orchestra, French also performed and recorded with numerous other jazz musicians throughout his career.
