Battle of Neustadt (1760)

The Battle of Neustadt (1760), also known as the Battle of Neustadt an der Tafelfichte, was a minor engagement fought on August 16, 1760, during the Third Silesian War, which was itself a theater of the larger Seven Years' War. It took place near the town of Neustadt an der Tafelfichte (present-day Nové Město pod Smrkem in the Czech Republic).

The battle involved Prussian forces under the command of General Heinrich August de la Motte Fouqué, who was attempting to cover the Prussian retreat from Silesia following setbacks against Austrian forces. The Prussians were harassed by Austrian troops led by Feldmarschallleutnant Joseph von Brentano.

The encounter was primarily a rearguard action. The Austrian forces managed to inflict casualties and capture some prisoners, but the Prussian retreat was ultimately successful. The Battle of Neustadt was not a decisive engagement in the wider war, but it contributed to the overall strategic situation in Silesia at the time. The Austrians aimed to disrupt Prussian movements and exploit their weaknesses.
