Batgirl (film)

Batgirl (film) was an unreleased American superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name. Produced by DC Films and Burr! Productions, and set to be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, it was intended to be part of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The film was directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, with a screenplay by Christina Hodson.

Leslie Grace starred as Barbara Gordon / Batgirl, alongside J. K. Simmons as James Gordon, Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne / Batman, and Brendan Fraser as Garfield Lynns / Firefly. The film's narrative centered on Barbara Gordon's journey as she balances her life as a Gotham City police officer with her secret identity as Batgirl.

Development of a Batgirl film began in 2017. Joss Whedon was initially set to write and direct, but he departed in 2018. Hodson was hired to write the script in 2018, and El Arbi and Fallah joined as directors in 2021. Casting began later that year. Filming took place in Glasgow, Scotland, from late 2021 to early 2022.

Despite being completed and reportedly costing $90 million, Warner Bros. Discovery controversially decided to shelve the film in August 2022. The studio cited strategic shifts and a focus on theatrical releases as reasons for the decision, claiming the film was not "releasable" in its current form and did not meet the standard for a large-scale theatrical release, opting instead to take a tax write-down. The cancellation generated significant criticism and debate regarding the future direction of DC Films and the DCEU. The film has never been officially released in any format.
