Bartholomew Bretherton (jockey)

Bartholomew "Bart" Bretherton (1873 – 1949) was a prominent American jockey in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was best known for his successes in major stakes races and his association with prominent stables of the era. Bretherton began his riding career as a teenager and quickly rose through the ranks, demonstrating skill and tactical acumen on the racetrack.

His notable victories included the Belmont Stakes in 1894 aboard Patron, the Kentucky Derby in 1900 aboard Lieutenant Gibson, and the Preakness Stakes in 1901 aboard The Parader. These wins cemented his reputation as one of the leading jockeys of his generation.

Bretherton was known for his strong finishes and his ability to assess pace, making him a highly sought-after rider for owners and trainers. He retired from racing in the early 1910s.
