Astrobee (robot)

Astrobee is a free-flying robot system developed by NASA for use inside the International Space Station (ISS). These cube-shaped robots are designed to assist astronauts with routine tasks, perform science experiments, and perform inspections, all while operating autonomously or under remote control.

The Astrobees are propelled by electric fans that provide omnidirectional movement, allowing them to navigate the complex and confined environment of the ISS without tethers. They are equipped with cameras and sensors to map their environment, detect obstacles, and interact with objects. Wireless communication allows them to receive commands from astronauts on the ISS or ground controllers on Earth and transmit data back.

The primary goals of the Astrobee program are to improve efficiency on the ISS, reduce the workload of astronauts, and enable new types of research that would be difficult or impossible for humans to conduct. By automating repetitive tasks such as inventory management, environmental monitoring, and sample retrieval, Astrobees allow astronauts to focus on more complex and critical activities. They also offer a platform for developing and testing new robotic capabilities in the unique environment of space, paving the way for future robotic missions to other planets and celestial bodies.

Astrobee uses an open-source software platform, allowing researchers and developers to contribute to the system's capabilities and explore new applications for free-flying robots in space. The system consists of the Astrobees themselves (currently three robots named Honey, Queen, and Bumble), docking stations for charging and data transfer, and supporting software and hardware.
