American Soccer League (2014–2017)

The American Soccer League (ASL), operating from 2014 to 2017, was a professional soccer league based in the United States. It was not affiliated with the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) or FIFA, and as such, its member clubs did not participate in the U.S. Open Cup. The ASL positioned itself as an alternative to USSF-sanctioned leagues, emphasizing a different business model and approach to player development.

The league's inaugural season was in 2014, with teams primarily located in the Mid-Atlantic region. Over its four seasons, the ASL experienced fluctuations in membership, with teams joining and leaving the league. Some notable teams included the Philadelphia Fury, the New York Cosmos B (reserve team of the NASL's New York Cosmos), and the Boston City FC.

The ASL sought to provide opportunities for players who were not necessarily pursuing the traditional path to professional soccer, including those who had finished their collegiate careers or were looking for a second chance after being released from other professional clubs. The league also aimed to offer a more affordable and accessible product for fans compared to higher-level leagues.

Despite its aims, the American Soccer League faced challenges in establishing itself in a crowded soccer landscape. It ultimately ceased operations following the 2017 season, with some of its former clubs moving to other leagues or folding altogether. The ASL's legacy is debated within American soccer circles, particularly regarding the role of unsanctioned leagues in the overall development of the sport.
