Alytus

Alytus is a city in southern Lithuania. It is the capital of Alytus County. Situated on the Nemunas River, Alytus is an important industrial, cultural, and recreational center.

History:

Alytus is one of the oldest cities in Lithuania, with archaeological evidence suggesting settlement dating back to the early Middle Ages. The first written mention of Alytus dates back to 1377 in the Chronicon terrae Prussiae of Wigand of Marburg. The city developed strategically due to its location on the Nemunas River, serving as a defense point against Teutonic Order incursions. In 1581, Alytus was granted Magdeburg rights by Grand Duke Stephen Báthory. Throughout its history, Alytus has been part of various political entities, including the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Russian Empire, and independent Lithuania. During World War II, Alytus was occupied by Nazi Germany, experiencing significant destruction and loss of life. After the war, it was part of the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic within the Soviet Union. Lithuania regained its independence in 1990, and Alytus became part of the newly independent state.
