Alticus

Alticus is a genus of combtooth blennies, ray-finned fishes in the family Blenniidae. They are found in the intertidal zones of the Indo-Pacific region, particularly in coral reefs and rocky shorelines.

Description:

Alticus species are typically small, elongated fish with a flattened head and a continuous dorsal fin. They possess characteristic comb-like teeth in their jaws, which are used for scraping algae from rocks. They lack scales. Their coloration varies greatly between species and can include patterns of stripes, spots, or blotches, often allowing them to blend in with their surroundings.

Habitat and Behavior:

Alticus blennies are amphibious fishes adapted to spending time both in and out of water. They are often observed clinging to rocks exposed to air during low tide. They are able to breathe air through their skin and gills, and can move across rocks using their pectoral fins. They are primarily herbivorous, feeding on algae and small invertebrates. Males are territorial and defend their chosen rock areas.

Distribution:

The genus Alticus is found throughout the Indo-Pacific region, ranging from the coasts of Africa to the islands of the Pacific Ocean. Different species are found in specific geographic locations within this broad range.

Classification:

Alticus belongs to the family Blenniidae, which is part of the order Perciformes. The classification of species within the genus can be subject to change as new research and taxonomic revisions are conducted.
