Alfonso XIII (Madrid Metro)
Alfonso XIII is a former station on Line 8 of the Madrid Metro. It was located beneath Alfonso XIII Avenue in the Chamartín district of Madrid, between the current Colombia and Pío XII stations. The station was named after King Alfonso XIII of Spain, who reigned from 1886 to 1931.
The station opened on June 29, 1924, as part of the original section of Line 8 (then known as the North-South Metropolitan Line). It was characterized by its short platforms, which were insufficient for the longer trains that began to be deployed on the line over time.
Due to these limitations, and the proximity of the neighboring stations, Alfonso XIII was closed to the public on May 21, 1998. The platforms were subsequently dismantled. While the station infrastructure remains largely intact, it is no longer accessible to passengers. Today, trains on Line 8 pass through the old station site without stopping. The closure allowed for the expansion of the platforms at Colombia and Pío XII, improving service and passenger capacity along the line.
