Alara (planthopper)
Alara is a genus of planthoppers belonging to the family Delphacidae. These small insects are characterized by their wedge-shaped bodies and prominent antennae. They are found in various parts of the world, often associated with specific host plants. Like other delphacids, Alara planthoppers feed on plant sap, using their piercing-sucking mouthparts to extract nutrients from phloem tissue. Their feeding activity can sometimes cause damage to plants, although the impact is usually minor unless populations are very high. Identification to species level often requires careful examination of morphological features, including the shape of the male genitalia, which are commonly used for taxonomic distinction within Delphacidae. They are typically active during the warmer months, coinciding with the growing season of their host plants. Research on Alara planthoppers contributes to understanding insect-plant interactions and the biodiversity of planthopper communities.
