Agostino Spinola (Doge of Genoa)
Agostino Spinola (1756 – 1823) was the 145th Doge of the Republic of Genoa, serving his term from March 13, 1787 to March 13, 1789. A member of the prominent Spinola family, which produced numerous Doges throughout Genoa's history, Agostino Spinola's tenure occurred during a period of relative peace and stability within the Republic, though the looming shadow of the French Revolution was beginning to be felt across Europe.
Little specific detail is widely available regarding his internal policies or specific initiatives during his two-year term. Records indicate his dogate focused primarily on maintaining existing Genoese trade relations and internal order. He presided over the usual ceremonies and administrative duties associated with the office of Doge.
He was married to Maddalena Serra. He died in Genoa in 1823, well after the annexation of Genoa by the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1815, which brought an end to the Republic of Genoa and its Doge system. His life represents a period of transition for Genoa, leading up to its eventual incorporation into a unified Italy.
