Aegae (Euboea)

Aegae was an ancient city located in Euboea, an island in Greece. Its precise location is debated among scholars, but it is generally believed to have been situated on the northwestern part of the island, near the coast, possibly in the region of modern-day Limni. Aegae was a relatively minor city, and relatively little is known about its history compared to other Euboean settlements like Chalcis or Eretria.

Historical sources indicate that Aegae was part of the Euboean League, a political and religious association of cities on the island. It is mentioned by various ancient geographers and historians, though often only briefly. The city's name, Aegae, (Αἰγαί) is a common toponym in ancient Greece, likely derived from the Greek word "aix" (αἴξ), meaning goat. Other cities with the same name existed, including one in Achaea and another in Macedonia, leading to potential confusion in historical accounts.

Archaeological evidence pertaining specifically to Aegae is scarce, and definitive confirmation of its exact location remains elusive. Some scholars have associated archaeological finds in the Limni area with the city, but this remains a matter of ongoing investigation and debate. The history of Aegae is largely intertwined with that of Euboea as a whole, and its fate likely followed the broader trends of the island's political and economic development. The city likely declined in importance during the Roman period and was eventually abandoned or assimilated into a larger settlement.
