Seokjeon

Seokjeon (석전, Hanja: 釋奠) is a Confucian ritual performed in Korea, usually at Confucian academies (Seowon) and Confucian shrines (Munmyo). It is a ceremony that honors Confucius and other important Confucian scholars and sages.

The Seokjeon ceremony involves elaborate music (Seokjeon eumak), dance (Ilmu), and offerings of food, wine, and other ritual objects. It is typically held twice a year, in the spring and autumn, on Confucius's birthday (September 28th) and another designated date. The purpose of the Seokjeon is to pay respect to the wisdom and teachings of Confucius and to promote Confucian values such as filial piety, loyalty, righteousness, and propriety.

The ceremony follows a strict protocol, with designated roles and responsibilities for the participants. These participants often include descendants of Confucian scholars, government officials, and members of Confucian societies. The rituals are performed in a precise and solemn manner, reflecting the importance of tradition and order in Confucian philosophy.

The Seokjeon is considered an important part of Korea's cultural heritage and is often recognized as an Intangible Cultural Property by the government. The preservation and performance of Seokjeon are seen as vital for maintaining and promoting Confucian traditions in modern Korean society.
