A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (musical)

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is a 1951 musical with a book by Betty Smith and George Abbott, lyrics by Dorothy Fields, and music by Arthur Schwartz. It is based on Smith's 1943 novel of the same name.

The musical tells the story of the Nolan family living in poverty in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, in the early 20th century. Francie Nolan, the central character, is a young girl with a vivid imagination and a love of reading who dreams of escaping her harsh surroundings. Her mother, Katie, is a strong and pragmatic woman who works as a janitor to support the family. Her father, Johnny, is a charming but irresponsible singing waiter whose alcoholism hinders the family's stability. Other key characters include Francie's Aunt Sissy, a kind-hearted but unconventional woman who offers support and love to Francie.

The musical explores themes of poverty, family, resilience, and the pursuit of dreams. It contrasts the harsh realities of working-class life with the hope and optimism that Francie finds in books and her own inner strength.

The original Broadway production opened at the Alvin Theatre on April 19, 1951, and ran for 270 performances. Shirley Booth won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance as Katie Nolan. The musical received generally positive reviews, but its run was shorter than expected.

While not as frequently revived as some other Golden Age musicals, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn remains a notable work for its heartfelt portrayal of working-class life and its strong female characters. Several recordings of the score exist, preserving its songs and story.
