96th Infantry Division (German Empire)

The 96th Infantry Division was a unit of the Prussian Army, and part of the German Army, during World War I. It was formed on August 26, 1916, and dissolved in 1919.

Organization:

The division was primarily formed from Landwehr units and saw service mainly on the Eastern Front. Later in the war, it was transferred to the Western Front. Specific organizational details are difficult to ascertain precisely due to the Landwehr composition and fluidity of troop movements, but typical infantry divisions of the German Army in World War I were composed of:

  • Two infantry brigades, each typically consisting of two infantry regiments.
  • One cavalry regiment (often detached early in the war).
  • One field artillery regiment.
  • One pioneer (engineer) battalion.
  • Various support units, including signals, medical, and supply detachments.

Combat History:

The 96th Infantry Division primarily fought on the Eastern Front, participating in defensive and offensive operations against the Russian Army. Later in the war, it was moved to the Western Front, where it likely participated in trench warfare and defensive battles against the Allied forces. Detailed accounts of specific battles and engagements involving the 96th Division are relatively scarce compared to elite divisions.

Dissolution:

The division was dissolved in 1919 following the armistice that ended World War I and the subsequent demobilization of the German Army.
