72nd Street station (Second Avenue Subway)
The 72nd Street station is a station on the IND Second Avenue Line of the New York City Subway. Located at the intersection of 72nd Street and Second Avenue in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, it is served by the Q train at all times and the N train during late nights.
The station is notable for its artwork, which includes mosaics by Brazilian artist Vik Muniz. These mosaics depict various figures of ordinary New Yorkers, aiming to reflect the diversity of the neighborhood.
The station features two tracks and one island platform. It is fully accessible, complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The 72nd Street station is part of Phase 1 of the Second Avenue Subway project, which aimed to alleviate crowding on the Lexington Avenue Line. The station provides connections to local bus routes operating on 72nd Street and Second Avenue.
The opening of the 72nd Street station in January 2017 marked a significant expansion of the subway system on the east side of Manhattan, improving transportation options for residents and visitors. Future phases of the Second Avenue Subway project are planned to extend the line further north and south.
