Te Kao
Te Kao is a small settlement located at the northern end of the North Island of New Zealand. Situated approximately 125 kilometers (78 miles) north of Kaitaia and near the entrance to Parengarenga Harbour, it lies within the Far North District and the Northland Region.
Historically, Te Kao has significance as a traditional Māori settlement. The area is part of the rohe (territory) of the Ngāti Kuri iwi (tribe). The name "Te Kao" is believed to refer to a type of native plant.
The local economy is primarily based on agriculture, horticulture, and tourism, with nearby beaches and Cape Reinga drawing visitors. Facilities in Te Kao include a school, a community hall, and some retail businesses. The area's relative remoteness contributes to its unique cultural character and connection to the natural environment.
