2nd Division (German Empire)

The 2nd Division was a formation of the Prussian Army, and later the Imperial German Army, existing from its initial formation in 1816 until its disbandment in 1919, following the end of World War I. Throughout its history, the division was primarily composed of troops from the provinces of Pomerania and Brandenburg.

Organization & Structure

The division's organization evolved over time, particularly during wartime. In peacetime, the 2nd Division typically consisted of:

  • Two infantry brigades.
  • One cavalry brigade.
  • One artillery brigade.

The infantry brigades were composed of several infantry regiments each, and the same was true for the cavalry brigade. The artillery brigade included multiple artillery regiments. Support units such as engineers, pioneers, medical personnel, and supply trains were also attached to the division.

Deployment & Battles

The 2nd Division participated in several major conflicts during the 19th and early 20th centuries, including:

  • The Austro-Prussian War (1866): The division fought in key battles during this conflict, contributing to Prussia's victory.
  • The Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871): The 2nd Division played a significant role in the war, engaging in battles such as the Battle of Sedan.
  • World War I (1914-1918): The division was active on both the Western and Eastern Fronts. It saw action in major battles, including those in the early stages of the war in Belgium and France, and later against the Russian Empire and subsequently in defensive positions on the Western Front.

Commanders

The 2nd Division was led by a series of commanders throughout its existence. These commanders were typically high-ranking officers in the Prussian or German Army, often with prior experience in command positions. The specific list of commanders is extensive, and a comprehensive detailing of all commanders would require further dedicated research.

Post World War I

Following the armistice in November 1918, the 2nd Division was gradually demobilized as part of the broader restructuring of the German military. By 1919, the division had been formally dissolved. Its remaining units were either disbanded or integrated into the newly formed Reichswehr.
