2/4th Commando Squadron (Australia)

The 2/4th Commando Squadron was an Australian Army commando unit of World War II. Raised as the 2/4th Independent Company in 1942, it was later redesignated as a squadron. It formed part of the 2nd Commando Regiment and saw action in New Guinea and Borneo.

Originally raised for independent operations behind enemy lines, the unit primarily conducted reconnaissance, raiding, and ambush missions. The men were volunteers, often selected for their resourcefulness, physical fitness, and bushcraft skills.

Notable campaigns the 2/4th participated in include operations around Wau and Salamaua in New Guinea during 1943-1944. Later, in 1945, they were involved in the Borneo campaign, including operations in Labuan and North Borneo (Sabah).

Following the end of World War II, the 2/4th Commando Squadron was disbanded in 1946 as part of the demobilization process. The unit is remembered for its bravery and effectiveness in difficult and dangerous conditions. Its battle honors are carried on by subsequent units of the Australian Army.
