2/12th Field Regiment (Australia)
The 2/12th Field Regiment was an Australian Army artillery regiment that served during World War II. Formed in 1940, it was part of the Second Australian Imperial Force (2nd AIF). The regiment was raised in New South Wales and initially consisted of two batteries, the 5th and 6th.
Throughout the war, the 2/12th Field Regiment saw action in the Middle East, including campaigns in North Africa and Syria. It later participated in the New Guinea campaign, fighting against the Japanese in areas such as Kokoda, Buna-Gona, and the Huon Peninsula.
Equipped with 25-pounder field guns, the regiment provided crucial artillery support to infantry units, neutralizing enemy positions and softening up defenses prior to attacks. They played a vital role in many key battles.
Following the end of World War II, the 2/12th Field Regiment was disbanded as part of the demobilization process. While no longer an active unit, its service is remembered in Australian military history.
