1221 Amor

1221 Amor is an Apollo asteroid and Mars-crosser, discovered on March 12, 1932, by Eugène Delporte at the Royal Observatory of Belgium in Uccle. It is significant as one of the first asteroids identified as approaching Earth, giving rise to the Amor asteroid group which are Near-Earth asteroids with orbits external to Earth's but interior to Mars's orbit.

Amor has an eccentric orbit which carries it from inside the orbit of Mars to somewhat beyond Earth's orbit. Its perihelion (closest approach to the Sun) lies outside Earth's orbit, which prevents it from crossing Earth's orbit.

The asteroid is named after Amor, the Roman god of love, corresponding to the Greek god Eros. The choice of this name reflects its significance as an early identified Near-Earth asteroid.

Physical characteristics of Amor are less well-known than its orbital characteristics. Its estimated diameter is a few kilometers, and its composition is believed to be S-type, suggesting a stony composition similar to many asteroids in the inner Solar System.
