Šavnik
Šavnik is a town in northwestern Montenegro. It is the administrative center of the Šavnik Municipality. Situated in the Drobnjaci region, it lies at an altitude of 840 meters above sea level, nestled amongst mountains and near the sources of several rivers.
Historically, the area was part of Old Herzegovina. The town itself is relatively young, having developed as an administrative and market center in the late 19th century. Its foundation is closely tied to the development of local industry, particularly sawmills, which utilized the abundant timber resources of the surrounding forests. The name "Šavnik" likely derives from these sawmills.
The Šavnik municipality is characterized by its mountainous terrain, sparsely populated rural areas, and significant agricultural activity, primarily livestock farming. Tourism, particularly eco-tourism and adventure tourism focused on hiking and fishing, is becoming increasingly important to the local economy.
The population of Šavnik town is relatively small. It has experienced population decline in recent decades, a trend common to many rural areas in Montenegro. The town has basic amenities including a municipal building, schools, healthcare facilities, and shops.
