Üliger

Üliger (also transliterated as Uligar, Uleger, or Uligeri) refers to a traditional form of oral epic storytelling prevalent among the Buryat people of Siberia and Mongolia. These epics are characterized by their length, often spanning multiple days, and their complex narratives involving heroes, deities, and mythical creatures. Üligers are typically performed by skilled storytellers known as uligershin or uligerchi, who recite the epic poems from memory, often accompanying themselves with music from instruments like the khuur (a type of horsehead fiddle).

The content of an Üliger often centers around themes of heroism, love, loyalty, and the struggle between good and evil. They frequently depict the founding of tribes, the exploits of legendary figures, and the relationship between humans and the spirit world. The oral transmission of Üligers has played a crucial role in preserving Buryat history, culture, and traditions.

The preservation of Üligers is considered vital for maintaining Buryat cultural identity. Efforts are underway to document and promote these oral epics through recordings, transcriptions, and performances.
