Zhinu (spider)
Zhinu, also known as the Weaver Girl, is a figure from Chinese mythology and folklore. She is primarily associated with weaving and is often depicted as a celestial being responsible for weaving colorful clouds in the sky. Her story is most famously linked to the Cowherd (Niulang) in the legend of the Weaver Girl and the Cowherd, which forms the basis for the Qixi Festival, also known as the Chinese Valentine's Day.
In the legend, Zhinu is the daughter of the Jade Emperor, a high-ranking deity in the Taoist pantheon. She is often described as a skilled and diligent weaver. The love story involves Zhinu descending to earth and falling in love with Niulang, a humble cowherd. They marry and have children, but their union is forbidden by the Jade Emperor, who forces Zhinu to return to the heavens. The Queen Mother of the West (Xi Wangmu) creates a wide river (often identified as the Milky Way) to separate them.
However, once a year, on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, magpies form a bridge across the river, allowing Zhinu and Niulang to reunite briefly. This annual reunion is celebrated during the Qixi Festival.
Zhinu is often associated with the star Vega, and Niulang is associated with the star Altair. Their corresponding stars are visible in the night sky, positioned on opposite sides of the Milky Way, visually representing their separation.
The story of Zhinu and Niulang is a classic tale of love, separation, and reunion, and it has been passed down through generations in Chinese culture. Zhinu is seen as a symbol of love, dedication, and skillful craftsmanship. The legend has inspired numerous works of art, literature, and performing arts throughout Chinese history.
