William Fleming (judge)
William Fleming (1736-1824) was a Virginia lawyer, politician, and judge. He served as a judge of the Virginia General Court, and as a member of the Virginia Court of Appeals.
Born in Jedburgh, Scotland, Fleming immigrated to Virginia as a young man and established himself as a successful lawyer. He served in the Virginia House of Burgesses and the Virginia Convention of 1776, playing a role in the state's declaration of independence from Great Britain.
Fleming's judicial career began in the General Court, where he served for many years. He was then appointed to the Virginia Court of Appeals, the state's highest court. He served on the Court of Appeals until his retirement.
Fleming was a prominent figure in early Virginia history, contributing to the development of its legal and political systems. His contributions as a judge helped shape the interpretation and application of Virginia law.
